Surrender

Can we help?

PRH wants to help you keep your bird.  Life happens and we know that all too well.  But we get through it and we shouldn’t lose our family members over it if we can help it.  So we offer hardship boarding, long-term boarding, rehabilitation, pantry options, and training opportunities, sometimes just some support and love are needed.  If any of these things give you hope, then fill out this form so we can know something about your situation so we can get to work figuring things out.  PRH Help Us Help You.  Send to our services email: services@papayagorescuehouse.com.

Surrender your parrot -currently, we are not accepting surrender applications.

PRH has an open admission philosophy, which means we accept birds regardless of health (barring certain flock-endangering diseases), age, species, or behavior that is surrendered to us. Did you know that it takes approximately 1 year for a person to emotionally detach themselves from a bird to the day of surrender?  That is a long time for you and a bird to go through the “motions”.  The reason why we mention this is that if you are thinking about surrendering, be aware of how you are realizing this into existence.  If you are pulling “away” from the bird by not handling him or her too often, then it stands to reason that the bird will yell for attention thus your patience wanes.

Only begin the process of surrendering your bird to PRH if the alternative resources we offer won’t or don’t address the circumstances you are experiencing with your bird.  Complete and send the surrender form along with a couple of pictures of your bird and your bird’s cage to our surrender team. You are leaving your bird in good hands.  They become our lifelong concern.

Preprocess to surrendering your bird:

  1. After you have filled out the surrender agreement and sent in pictures of your bird and cage, you will get a notification from us within 7 to 10 business days.  Send the surrender agreement and pictures to surrender@papayagorescuehouse.com.  If you feel this is an emergency, please state your emergency in your email with your surrender agreement. Do not wait for another time to inform us!
  2. We will need to do disease testing of your bird to ensure we are aware of the health of your bird prior to being around our flock.  We will send you a link to schedule the disease testing based on your availability and ours.  We prefer curbside service for this activity.  Just call us when you arrive.
  3. The disease testing is conducted by us and sent to a qualified lab such as Animal Genetics or IQ Bird Testing.  The cost of the disease testing is due on the day of the disease test of $90.00 for each bird.  It is $45.00 for parakeets.  If you have to expedite our receiving the results back, there will be an additional fee for FedEx services.  It can take up to 2 weeks based on the day we send it in and the season.
  4. Once we receive the results back, we will notify you of the test results and send you a link for surrendering your bird.

*There is a $50 charge for home testing along with the normal testing rates.

Here is how the process will go:

  1. Send in your surrender agreement with pictures of your bird, and his/her cage
  2. It can take 7 to 10 business days to hear back from us
  3. Schedule disease testing via the link located on our Contact Us page, right-hand side to the Calendly drop down, and select Disease Testing IF YOU WISH TO BE ON OUR WAITING LIST
  4. Show up for disease testing, pay the disease test costs, and take your bird home
  5. Spend time with your bird as they will need your support for the next part of his/her journey.
  6. We will send you the test results once they come in which can take up to 2 weeks
  7. We will send you a link to surrender your bird.
  8. On the day of surrender, bring your bird in a carrier, and their things should go on our side of the building for disinfection. We can give the carrier back if necessary, just let us know.
  9. Pay any agreed donations or surrender fees.
  10. Stay connected with us via FB or Instagram.  We are not able to give out updates once the bird has been surrendered due to time constraints.  We are not able to share your information with the newly adopted home or theirs with you.

Papayago Rescue House Surrender form 2023

Found a stray parrot?

Call your local animal control facility to see if a report was filed matching the description of the animal in your care immediately.  Get the bird to the vet for emergency hydration/care.  The vet will also advise you of dangers you may have in your home you are unaware of such as Febreze, Glade scented plugins, Teflon pans, candles, essential oils, pine-sol, scented sweep and mop pads, etc.

Check to see if its owner has filed a lost pet report on any local lost pet forums or places like Craigslist. Then reach out to http://www.911parrotalert.com/report-found-bird/ or go to Facebook 911 Parrot Alert (Official) to describe the found bird. Get a poster from them.  Post to us, NextDoor, Craigslist, etc. to get the word out.  This is someone’s family member we have to remember.

If no report is found and/or you wish to bring the bird to PRH please contact our surrenders team. Our staff will explain the process and find a date and time for you to bring the bird in.

The bird will then be held in quarantine for the state-mandated five days to provide his or her owner time to locate it. Our staff will search online and call around as well to help facilitate their return home. If the owner does not come forward, we will proceed with finding him/her a new home after a 30-day quarantine has passed.
